Community garden forming

Shelby resident Julie Young is leading an effort to form a community garden. The city donated land on the corner of McBrayer and Blanton streets. All she needs now is some volunteers. Here are some pictures of where the future garden will be located:

Trying to bring new life to an old mill


Recently, the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center contributed a $25,000 pre-development grant for an architectural analysis and feasibility and marketing studies for the former Double Shoals Cotton Mill in Lawndale. The Cleveland County Board of Commissioners gave $5,000, which can be recouped if the structure sells.

Get ready to walk...Step One Challenge starts soon.


WHAT: Step One Challenge

WHEN: Registration is from March 27 through April 13. Contest begins April 28.

WHERE: Sign up at the following locations: Cleveland County Health Department, Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Kings Mountain Hospital, First National Bank in the county, Cleveland County libraries, senior centers in Kings Mountain and Shelby, Shelby City Park and all YMCA locations in the county.

WHO: Anyone who lives or works in Cleveland County can sign up. Participants must age 12 or older.

HOW: Each participant is given a pedometer and they log their steps. Conversion sheets are used for activities other than walking.

COST: Free

Cleveland County's Heart Gala

About 200 county residents headed to Triple D Publishing Saturday night for the glitz and glamour of one of Cleveland County's most prestigious events: The American Heart Association's Heart Gala. This year's event should raise about $200,000.
